Responsible Sourcing

Outside the UK season, some of the vegetables grown by Barfoots are produced in developing countries. Barfoots are conscious of the need to produce such vegetables ethically and without exploitation. We recognise that we have a valuable role in the employment and human rights standards of our supply base and in the improvement of the environmental impacts of our supply chains.

We have developed a number of policies and procedures to ensure responsible sourcing standards are defined and managed. These schemes are based upon the Ethical Trading Initiative's Base Code which calls for safe hygienic factories, collective bargaining, fair pay, an end to child labour, living wages, reasonable working hours and regular employment. The Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) is an alliance of companies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and trade union organisations which exists to promote and improve the implementation of corporate codes of practice covering supply chain working conditions. The ultimate goal of the ETI is to ensure that the working conditions of those producing for the UK market meet or exceed international labour standards. Our supply base is audited through a mixture of internal, third party and self-assessment audits, based upon a risk-assessment process. We have a monitoring and review process and will work with our suppliers to promote and improve best practice.

In summary, Barfoots believe that responsibility to producers goes beyond providing a fair price for goods and are working to monitor and improve overall conditions for all those associated with our business in the major producing countries. We will continue to review our policies in order to ensure that they reflect latest legislation and individual needs; our work with customers and stakeholders to promote and improve best practice is ongoing.
