How much Sweetcorn do we grow?
We are Europe's most prolific grower of Sweetcorn growing 1250 acres of Sweetcorn in the UK. We start drilling in March and harvest normally from late July until mid to late October. Through carefully planned programmes with our grower base around the world, we have an uninterrupted supply of fresh Sweetcorn 12 months of the year. |
What makes Sweetcorn sweet?
Sweetcorn is sweet because it contains a large amount of Sucrose. The amount of Sucrose will depend on the variety, the weather (more sun, more sugar), its freshness, maturity and temperature. Sweetcorn should be stored in the refrigerator and used within its Display Until date for optimum taste. |
What is Supersweet Sweetcorn?
Supersweet Sweetcorn has more sweetness than the first generation of sugar enhanced Sweetcorn as such it can be described as a second-generation Sweetcorn. |
What is the new third generation Sweetcorn?
It is a conventionally bred type of Sweetcorn that is genetically more refined in terms of sweetness than its previous generations. It has more Sweetness than Supersweet Sweetcorn and maintains this sweetness over a longer period of time, giving it a longer shelf life. Its Pericarp (the skin of the kernel) is much thinner and therefore the old problems of getting corn stuck in your teeth is far less likely making the eating process even more pleasant. |
Is it Genetically Modified?
No, all our Sweetcorn is GM free. There are no GM approved Supersweet Sweetcorn varieties grown in Europe. |
Is it Organic?
No, however all our Sweetcorn is certified to demonstrate that it is grown following Integrated Farm Management Systems. |
Can I buy it all year?
Yes, Barfoots supply fresh Sweetcorn for 12 months of the year, coming from Florida between December and May, Spain from May to July, UK from July to October, Spain from October to December and so back to Florida. |
What is a Supply Chain? |
Fresh vegetables are highly-perishable. From the growing and harvesting of the vegetables through to their temperature-controlled distribution ready for sale in the retail outlet, our supply chain is collectively responsible for delivering the right products, in the right quantities at the right times. |

What is the best way to cook Sweetcorn?
Sweetcorn should be cooked lightly to prevent it from becoming tough. It can be Boiled, Microwaved and Roasted. Boil by bringing a large saucepan of water to the boil, add the Sweetcorn and return to the boil. Turn off the heat and leave to stand for five minutes. To Microwave, place the ears of corn in a microwaveable dish and add four tablespoons of water. Microwave on high for three minutes turn dish and microwave for a further three minutes. To Grill or BBQ wrap each cob in foil, place on grill turning frequently for eight minutes or until cooked. Roast in an oven at 375°F for 15 to 20 minutes. Nutritionally, Sweetcorn is high in Vitamin C, Dietary Fibre and contains about 120 calories per cob.
