Sweetcorn is also rich in carbohydrates and sugars, and contains useful amounts of Vitamin A, B3 and C. It also contains folic acid, fibre and protein. What's the history behind Sweetcorn?People have been eating sweetcorn for over 7,000 years. Images have been found of Aztecs tucking into sweetcorn. In this country, we have been eating sweetcorn for as long as we have been eating potatoes. Columbus brought sweetcorn back from the USA, or the New World as it was known then. Where is it grown?Sweetcorn is a sun worshipper, grown in summer sunshine in the USA, Africa, Spain, France and Greece. Barfoots grow sweetcorn along the South Coast, in Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, from July to October.
How is it grown and harvested?Sweetcorn is related to maize, although the supersweet varieties are specially developed to be eaten fresh, rather than canned. The UK market is from July to Mid October, when Sweetcorn is handpicked in the cool early morning or evening, then chill iced to make sure it stays fresh, crunchy and sweet tasting.
Enjoying Sweetcorn'De-husked', try cooking the cob in foil in the oven, or microwaved or steamed. A BBQ sensation awaits you when you cook it with the leaves on. Simple turn every couple of minutes until the outside leaves are partially burnt.
